The ALBATROSS project has released its first series of Policy Briefs and Country Synthesis Reports. These synthesize findings from over 250 policy documents across Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa, and Tanzania

The analysis looked at how Sustainable Development Goals, Nature-based Solutions, Climate Services, Gender & Social Inclusion, and Indigenous and Local Knowledge are integrated into climate and environmental frameworks.

The policy briefs reviewed over 250 environmental policies across Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, and South Africa. They reveal that although 70% of documents align with SDGs such as Climate Action, operational frameworks remain weak. Similarly, while over 70% of policies reference Nature-based Solutions (NbS), comprehensive integration is limited to just 30%, often leaving vital ecosystems such as urban areas underrepresented.

Gender inclusion is referenced in 65% of policies, yet only one third include specific actions. Indigenous and Local Knowledge (IKLK) is acknowledged in half of the documents but is rarely embedded in legally binding regulations.

Researchers call for stronger collaboration between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) to harmonize the integration of NbS, enhance climate services, and formally embed IKLK into legal frameworks. The findings aim to guide policymakers toward more inclusive and resilient climate action.
