Areas of Work:

  • Climate Impact Mitigation
  • Rural development, particularly the tension between nature conservation and agriculture
  • Animal ecology and population management
  • Modeling of complex systems, particularly GIS-based multi-agent modeling

Research Projects:

Experimental Housing and Urban Planning (ExWoSt): Climate-Resilient Urban Development – Addressing the Causes and Consequences of Climate Change Through Urban Concepts

  • The core of the preliminary study for the ExWoSt research area “Climate-Resilient Urban Development” is the development of an integrated “Municipal Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan” in the form of a decision-support tool and its pilot testing in model municipalities. Areas of responsibility and activities related to climate protection and adaptation strategies are being developed in the form of expert reports.
  • Duration: 2009–2010
  • Client: BMVBS / BSSR

Spatial Planning Model Projects (MORO): Spatial Development Strategies for Climate Change—Preliminary Study for Model Projects

  • The objective of the research project is to prepare model projects in spatial planning for adaptation strategies to the spatially relevant impacts of climate change. To this end, the research project pursues three sub-objectives:

  1. Spatial typology of climate changes and their consequences, i.e., the identification of regional climate change spatial types and their classification into climate change vulnerability spatial types to identify “spatial hotspots” (climate risk areas).

  2. Development of specific strategies, i.e., the formulation of region-specific protection, mitigation, and adaptation strategies for regional planning, thereby identifying the need for action in spatial planning and potential strategies (climate change action types), based on a nationwide analysis of existing spatial planning instruments and governance approaches.

  3. Preparation of regional climate change pilot projects based on the characterization of example regions affected by climate change, incorporating region-specific protection, mitigation, and adaptation strategies.

  • Duration: 2008–2009
  • Commissioned by: BMVBS / BSSR
