LIRLAP - First stage of fieldwork completed in Metro Manila, Philippines
- Projects
Project staff from the partner university of the Philippines (UP SURP) as well as Dr. Wolfgang Scholz from the Faculty of Spatial Planning, Hannes Lauer from the University of Stuttgart and Prof. Mathias Kaiser from the engineering office KaiserIngenieure spent two weeks in Metro Manila for field activities after a two-year COVID-19-related travel break. The team visited 16 settlements in the National Capital Region and surrounding provinces in March 2022 – including 10 resettlement sites and six informal settlements with potential for upgrading, especially against flood risks. Parts of the fieldwork were group discussions with homeowner organizations, local politics, housing associations, community workers, urban poor groups and NGOs. Each settlement was analysed through urban planning inventories and assessment of flood risks. The aim was to prepare further work steps for the analysis of the settlements and future empirical work steps. From April to June 2022, a large-scale household survey and target group discussions were carried out first in the ten resettlement sites and then in six upgrading locations. This important step has been completed, and the results will be analysed in the summer.
