History of the Chair of Regional Development and Risk Management (RER)

With the founding of the Department of Spatial Planning in 1968, the decision was made to establish a joint Institute for Spatial Planning (IRPUD). The goal was to create a modern research unit that coordinates interdisciplinary projects and develops scientific foundations for spatial planning (Founding Vision of the Institute for Spatial Planning; TUDO Archive; Wegener 2014).

IRPUD was officially established in 1974 as the central scientific institution of the Department of Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund, with Klaus R. Kunzmann as its first director. He played a key role in shaping the institute and was committed to establishing spatial planning as a scientific discipline. Over the following years, the institute was led by Heinrich Schoof (1994–1997), Paul Velsinger (1998–2000), Michael Wegener (2000–2002), Hans-Peter Tietz (2003–2005), Hans Heinrich Blotevogel (2005–2009), Dietwald Gruehn (2010), and Stefan Greiving (since 2011).

In recent decades, the research focus has increasingly shifted towards spatial risk and climate impact research as well as regional development. This evolution led to the reorganisation of IRPUD, which has been continued as the Research Group of Regional Development and Risk Management (RER) since August 2024, with Stefan Greiving as Chairholder. RER combines long-standing expertise in spatial modelling with current issues in spatial planning, particularly in the fields of spatial risk research, climate change and adaptation, spatial planning and regional development, public services of general interest, and critical infrastructures (more information in the section about us).
