ZUKUR – Zukunft-Stadt-Region-Ruhr
- Projects
Zukunft-Stadt-Region-Ruhr (ZUKUR) [Future-City-Region-Ruhr], funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, aims to develop contributions to reduce social-ecological inequality and to increase climate resilience in the region, its cities, and districts. The Ruhr Regional Association (regional level), the city of Bottrop (city-level), and Dortmund-Marten (neighborhood level) are participating as practice partners. Based on identified ecological, social and economic challenges and state of the art in research on resilience and environmental justice, adaptation strategies are developed and translated into concrete goals and measures for a future-proof and sustainable urban region.
Because of this, a workshop in cooperation with the City of Bottrop was held on 25 November 2019 to develop strategies for the implementation of its climate campaign and discuss a sustainability check for urban projects. This is to serve as a basis for administration and politics to evaluate future projects and decisions according to their ecological, economic, and social consequences. Based on these discussions, an adapted sustainability check will be presented in a second workshop at the end of January that will focus, in particular, on environmental justice.
In the next two months, approaches will also be developed and tested on the regional and neighborhood level in order to formulate target agreements. In February, together with the Ruhr Regional Association and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy, there will be a perspective discussion on the report on the state of the environment in the Metropole Ruhr and the extent to which indicators of environmental justice can be added. In Dortmund Marten, as part of a district-related green concept, a workshop on the subject of green infrastructure will be conducted in March together with the city administration.
Furthermore, the Dortmund Conference on Spatial and Planning Research will take place for the fifth time on 17 and 18 February 2020. In a total of four sessions and one roundtable, ZUKUR will present results and stimulate discussion. The topics covered will be climate resilience and environmental justice, living in this area of conflict, the Ruhr cycling path, and the co-production of knowledge in living labs.
