FloodJustice explores social-ecological inequalities in flood risk management in the Rur river basin, home to more than 1.1 million people. The project aims to analyse and advance flood risk management strategies through a justice-oriented perspective, thereby strengthening acceptance, effectiveness and long-term climate resilience.

The project addresses spatial, social, temporal and ecological inequalities, such as upstream-downstream dynamics, imbalances between municipalities that provide land for flood protection and those that primarily benefit from it, and differential vulnerabilities of social groups. Based on comprehensive geospatial analyses, FloodJustice develops a scientifically grounded “justice check” to systematically identify and assess inequalities.

In close collaboration with regional stakeholders, the project designs and tests compensation and balancing mechanisms in pilot areas, contributing to socially just, acceptable and implementable flood risk management and climate adaptation strategies.
