Project duration: 01/2019 to 09/2021

The aim of the KlimaWaGe project is to develop and test transferable strategies and measures that promote a climate change adaption of new developed or stock commercial and industrial areas in German municipalities. The emphasis is on climate impacts caused by heat/drought and heavy rainfall. In the City of Bottrop, which also operates as a cooperation partner of the project, suitable strategies and measures are going to be developed and implemented in a practice-oriented manner.

So far, there has been a complete lack of projects that focuses on adapting to the climatic impacts of existing and newly planned commercial and industrial areas. A typical micro climate for commercial areas may even show greater heating than inner city residential areas due to the extreme degree of sealing and be equally affected by convective extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, hail or storms.

The project will therefore elaborate innovative thematic and methodological approaches that further develop existing planning procedures, contribute to the development of sustainable municipal networks of actors and thus enable the development of commercial and industrial areas adapted to climate change. In each module of the project, three possible municipal planning situations in the development of commercial and industrial areas will be addressed.

1. Development/adaption of existing commercial and industrial areas
2. Revitalization of industrial waste land
3. Development of potential commercial and industrial area

Outcome of the project will be a modular guideline "Climate Change Adapted Commercial and Industrial Areas", which will be piloted in the City of Bottrop. The climate impact analysis, the development of strategies, measures and their implemetation will also be suitable for adoption throughout Germany because of the nationwide consistent construction planning law.

Cooperation
The project is beeing carried out by IRPUD together with the Department of Environment and Green of the City of Bottrop.

Funding and Duration
The project is funded by the BMU (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) as a municipal pilot project within the framework of the funding program "Adaptation to the Impacts of Climate Change" and has a duration of 30 months
