Project duration: 06/2017 to 06/2020

Impacts of climate change are noticeably intensifying in Germany and all over the world, especially extreme weather events such as river floods, flash floods and heat waves. Extreme weather events affect our society and the environment we live in. But not only climatic changes, also environmental influences, like pollutant emission (air or noise for example), impair our cities and their residents. In consequence, cities and infrastructure as well as environmental and social systems need to be adapted to the current and future climatic situation.

The overall aim of the project ZUKUR (Zukunft-Stadt-Region-Ruhr) is to increase climate resilience and to reduce socio-ecological inequalities. A living lab approach will help to identify existing and potential future challenges on regional, city and district level and is used to draw strategies on handling future climate impacts and socio-economic inequalities. Besides TU Dortmund University, which is involved as scientific project partner with 10 chairs from the Department of Spatial Planning, the following project partners from planning practice are involved in ZUKUR: The Regional Association Ruhr (on regional level), the City of Bottrop (on city level) and Dortmund Marten (on district level).
